Match report

Salzburg Regional League Matchday 3: SV Grödig 0-2 FC Pinzgau Saalfelden

Grödig, August 18 2020

FC Pinzgau Saalfelden comfortably beat SV Grödig 2-0 in front of 150 fans at Das.Goldberg Stadion on Matchday 3 of the Salzburg Regional League season. Tamas Tandari and Lukas Schubert netted midway through the first half as the Mountainous Pine Blues returned to winning ways and kept their first clean sheet of the campaign.

The scenario: Having defeated SV Wals-Grünau 3-1 on the opening day, FCPS suffered their first defeat of 2020/21 as they were beaten 2-0 at home by Austria Salzburg on Saturday. Former Bundesliga outfit SV Grödig, meanwhile, were still looking for their first points of the season, having lost 3-1 and 4-3 to Austria Salzburg and SV Seekirchen respectively.

The action: FCPS head coach Christian Ziege, who was still without the injured trio of Simon Ollert, Raphael Streitwieser and Michael Viehhauser, lined up his charges in a 4-4-2 formation. He made two changes to the XI that started on Saturday, with Semir Gvozdjar and Lukas Moosmann replacing Harry Cooksley and Niklas Mühlbacher. Grödig boss Heimo Pfeifenberger opted for a 4-3-3 system with Eyüp Erdogan leading the line. But Felix Hebesberger and Niklas Preslmayr missed out through suspension after being sent off at the weekend.

FC Pinzgau Saalfelden looked like they had a point to prove in the opening stages of the game, dominating possession, getting stuck into the challenges and showing great intensity. But chances were initially few and far between against a deep-lying Grödig side that sat back and showed little desire to press until their opponents crossed the halfway line.

It was ultimately a set-piece that brought about the breakthrough for FCPS in the 20th minute, with captain Tandari firing through a crowd of players and into the bottom corner from the edge of the box following a corner-kick by Dominik Kirschner.

Lukas Schubert doubled the advantage barely two minutes later when he was brought down inside the penalty area by Dejan Janjic. The former Grödig captain stepped up to take the resultant spot-kick and fired the ball past shot-stopper Jakob Zankl to give the visitors a commanding two-goal lead with only a quarter of the game played.

The Mountainous Pine Blues might have added a third on 34 minutes when Dominik Kirschner latched onto a through-ball inside the penalty area, but despite sidestepping Julian Vincetic with ease he could not direct his effort on target. Alexander Gadenstätter then missed the target with a volley from the edge of the box four minutes later.

There were chances at both ends in the opening minutes of the second period, with Tandari inches away from tapping a Gvozdjar cross into an empty net from point-blank range in the 49th minute and Patrick Schober having a low effort towards the near post turned behind for a corner by FCPS custodian Stipo Colic at the other end a minute later.

Gvozdjar and Jatta both failed to take advantage of decent chances in the 56th and 57th minutes, before Julian Kanzler sidefooted wide from a promising position 60 seconds later. But Colic’s goal was otherwise never under threat and the Mountainous Pine Blues ultimately always looked in control as they saw out the win and sealed their first-ever three points in Grödig.

FCPS now have four days before their next fixture: SV Seekirchen will be the opponents on Saturday (22 August) as Christian Ziege’s charges aim to pick up their next three points.
